Alth & Partner Fachärzte für Radiologie GmbH
Your attending physician has referred you for an X-ray examination of the stomach and duodenum. To ensure we can optimally assess your stomach and duodenum, please follow these preparation recommendations:
Preparation for Stomach X-ray
Please refrain from eating or drinking for 4 hours before the examination to ensure the stomach and duodenum are completely empty. This is necessary for us to examine your stomach and duodenum. No additional preparation is required.
Stomach X-ray - Examination Procedure:
You will start by standing on the examination table in the X-ray room. You will be given approximately 1 tablespoon of effervescent powder to swallow, followed by an equal amount of water. This creates gas in your stomach, causing it to expand, which is necessary for clear imaging and examination.
Please do not burp the gas produced in the stomach.
Next, you will drink a barium-containing X-ray contrast medium, which is not particularly pleasant-tasting but necessary for the examination.
After drinking the contrast medium, you will be moved to a supine position on the examination table. You will then be asked to rotate once around your body axis to allow the contrast medium to coat all parts of the stomach.
Several images of your stomach and duodenum will then be taken in different positions. Finally, additional images will be taken while standing. The examination is painless and safe.
Kidney X-ray (Intravenous Pyelography, IVP) is used to detect changes in your kidneys, ureters, and bladder. This examination requires the administration of iodine-based contrast medium into a vein.
To ensure we can optimally assess your kidneys, ureters, and bladder, please follow these preparation recommendations:
Preparation for Kidney X-ray - IVP
2 Days Before the Examination:
Low-residue diet: Drink plenty of fluids, avoid fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grain products, fatty foods, and sweets.
1 Day Before the Examination:
Midday: Low-residue diet (as above)
Evening: Minimal low-residue diet, plenty of fluids.
For breakfast, we recommend tea, coffee, and, if needed, some rusk – plenty of fluids are allowed.
Until the examination, you should not eat, but additional drinks are permitted without issue.
Kidney X-ray - Examination Procedure
You will lie on the X-ray examination table.
First, an X-ray image without contrast medium is taken to detect kidney stones. Then, iodine-based contrast medium is administered through a vein in your arm.
The contrast medium is transported via the bloodstream to the kidneys and excreted through the urinary tract.
This process is examined with multiple X-ray images, allowing us to detect changes in your kidneys, ureters, and bladder.
The examination typically takes less than 30 minutes and is painless, aside from the small prick for contrast medium administration.
To rule out potential contrast medium intolerance, please complete the questionnaire.
2 Hours Before the Examination:
You should not eat until the examination, but drinks are permitted without issue.
Phlebography - Examination Procedure
You will first receive a warm foot bath for the affected leg in the examination room to dilate the veins on the top of the foot.
You will then be brought to the examination room, where the doctor will puncture a vein on the top of your foot while you are in a semi-reclining position. This can be challenging, so a second puncture may sometimes be necessary to ensure proper and secure needle placement in the vein.
Iodine-based contrast medium is then administered through a connecting tube into the vein on the top of your foot, allowing the leg veins to be visualized.
Multiple images are taken with the leg in various rotations.
Finally, you will be asked to press with your abdomen as if having a bowel movement. This increases abdominal pressure, stops blood flow in the veins, and makes any defective vein valves visible.
